Over in the woods
Is a fort I once made
When I was younger
And my hair hadn’t grayed
Down there is the pond
Where I learned to fish
Just me and my Pappaw
When I was just a kid
Sitting on the back porch
In the Miss’ippi heat
Sipping on a glass
Of Granny’s sweet tea
It’s bringing me back,
Bringing me home,
Bringing me back
To before I was grown
Pappaw drove a Chevy
Never drove a Ford
Went to church on Sunday
So we could praise the Lord
Piling in the truck
And heading into town
Listening to him talk
To whoever was around
I was feeding cows
And learning how
To do all kinds of things
Like baiting hooks
And driving trucks
Man, how times have changed
Now I’m sitting on the back porch
Listening to the breeze
Hearing my childhood
Coming through the trees
It’s calling me back,
Calling me home,
Calling me back
To where I once roamed
Funny how it don’t
Seem quite as big
As it once did
When I was just a kid
When I was running
Through the pastures
Helping plow the fields
Checking out the harvest
Seeing what it yields
I was feeding cows
And learning how
To do all kinds of things
Like baiting hooks
And driving trucks
Man, how times have changed
Now I’m sitting on the back porch
Tears rolling down my face
Thinking bout the good times
I’ve had in this place
It’s calling me back,
Calling me home,
Calling me back
To where I once roamed

On Day 2 of our vacation this year I mentioned to Tammy that I thought I could write a song but that I needed to start drinking whiskey first. This “song” came to me, whiskey free, as I was driving to spend the night with my grandmother Wednesday night.
I wish I could say I was sitting on the back porch when I wrote it, but the truth is I scribbled it down on paper while I drove.
Wow, that’s pretty good. But no more texting, even on paper, while you are driving!
Thanks… At least there wasn’t any whiskey involved. That could have REALLY been bad, what with all the driving and writing. hahaha…
But imagine how much better it’d be if I HAD been drinking (but not driving)… hahaha…
I really think this should have included a video with you singing the lyrics for the full effect. But the song-writing skill definitely shows. And I’m definitely scared that you wrote this while driving as well.
I guess I’ll be the one that says you’re competent enough to concentrate on driving and writing at the same time. A little dangerous, but not as dangerous as the whiskey and driving, and YOU KNOW I KNOW ABOUT THAT! HaHa
Just a suggestion, you may want to think about putting all of your poems together and making a booklet. This, plus some of your other works, I think could be published and marketed. Prayers out to you and yours. 🙂
A agree with Karen – you should do a video!! I want Pappaw’s Chevy!! That is awesome.
