Miss Toddy Lives… In My Neighborhood

There’s a lot of things I don’t remember about growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi, but the other day I was reminded about something, or should I say someone, Miss Toddy.

Kind of how I envision Miss Toddy, minus all the cats.

Kind of how I envision Miss Toddy, minus all the cats.

Although I can’t recall ever actually seeing Miss Toddy, I know she existed because we always talked about her on the bus, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned from fellow blogger, Young American Wisdom, it’s that if you “heard it on the bus” then it’s true.

The possibly mythical creature known as Miss Toddy was famous for doing odd things in public as the bus took us through her neighborhood, all while she was in her robe.

Miss Toddy was kind of like the “crazy cat lady” you hear about today only that she didn’t have any cats, that I know of.

On more than one occasion I heard about her boobs popping out of her robe as she walked down the road. But the one that really sticks out in my head was when I heard about her actually pooping in the middle of the street, her favorite place to walk.

I remember hearing people saying stuff like, “Ooooo, there’s Miss Toddy,” but she always seemed to appear on the opposite side of the bus from me, which makes me think she may have been the stuff of leprechauns or unicorns.

The reason Miss Toddy was on my mind recently was because it appears my neighborhood as its own, much milder version, of Miss Toddy, and like Miss Toddy, I’m not really sure where Miss Toddy II lives.

I started seeing her a few weeks ago as she was walking with following the mail lady, Becky, as she made the stops at the houses on my street. Yes, I know my mail lady’s name. We bonded this summer when she became friends with Savannah, who was often laying in the sun and would run toward her looking for treats.

About a week ago I was sitting at the kitchen table and saw Becky’s head zip by the windows at faster pace than usual. I stuck my head out the back door to say Hi and saw why she was in such a hurry.

About 10 yards behind her was Miss Toddy II, who was gaining ground as Becky stopped to chat. Once I saw who she was running from I said I was just saying hello and didn’t mean to keep her from her “friend.” She rolled her eyes and smirked as she picked up her pace and was off to the next house.

Usually Miss Toddy II waited until Becky was actually delivering mail before she joined her on the route. But yesterday I saw Miss Toddy II walking down the road, the middle of the road at that, toward Becky.

A quick peek out the bedroom window revealed that Becky was still in her mail truck. Miss Toddy II had gone from chasing Becky on part of her mail route to snagging as soon as her truck pulled into the neighborhood.

Not long after I saw Miss Toddy II running down the middle of the street I saw Becky’s head flash by my window. But this time instead of running down the sidewalk she was shuffling due to all of the ice and snow on the ground.

Think about how bad it must have been for Becky to be risking life and limb on icy sidewalks (that I didn’t clear) to get away from Miss Toddy II.

While part of me felt bad for Becky, there was part of me that was jealous because she’s actually seen her own version of a Miss Toddy.

Kinda what our Becky looks like running from Miss Toddy II, if Becky were a man and Miss Toddy II was an ostrich.

  1. That’s a funny story! The myth of Miss Toddy. I don’t think I’ve ever had a Miss Toddy in my life.

I’ve had a couple people from high school who remembered the story, but couldn’t remember her name, and others who didn’t remember her at all. Maybe she WAS a myth. haha…

  2. I think every neighborhood has a “Miss Toddy.” The kids in our neighborhood actually refer to ours as the “Crazy Cat Lady.” Great minds think alike ;). They’re all afraid of her and run inside whenever they spy her outside. They’re convinced she scrapes dead animals off the street, cooks them up and eats them. At least that’s the rumor on the bus. 🙂

Thanks for the shout out! And, by the way, I know my mail lady, too. Her name is Sue.
    Awesome post!

You are very welcome for the shout out. I couldn’t resist the chance to let everyone know that if you hear it on the bus then it’s true. 😉

That’s so funny that they run from the Crazy Cat Lady and I’m sure I would have run from Miss Toddy had I actually seen her. Who knows, maybe I did see her and she was so horrible that I blocked her from my memory. haha…

Glad you know that you know your mail lady. I didn’t know if people would think that was weird or not.

  3. I suspect we all have at least one “Miss Toddy” in our history and in our neighborhood. Myth and reality run together.

You are prolly right about everyone having some form of a Miss Toddy in their lives at some point. What a crazy world we live in… 🙂

  4. Yep! I think most neighbourhoods have some version of Miss Toddy!
Ah…. the eccentric ones…. gotta love them! They bring out the imagination in people! 🙂

The best part of the pictures was the ostrich. Your mail lady should try throwing banana peels at Miss Toddy II.
