Around this time of year people start getting excited for things like pumpkin lattes, the leaves changing colors, and the smell of fireplaces in the air. But I get excited for a different reason.
This time of year gets me giddy because it’s time for hairy upper lips to step into the spotlight; it means it’s time for Movember.
What is Movember you ask?
The Movember Foundation is the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health. We achieve this by challenging men to grow mustaches during Movember (the month formerly known as November) to spark conversation and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.
On Movember 1, hundreds of thousands of men in the United States alone will start the day with a clean shaven face then proceed to grow a mustache for the next 30 days, all in an effort to shine a spotlight on issues that men like to keep in the shadows.
Last year our team, Bloggers for Movember, raised just under $1,000 during the month and grew some awesome mustaches in the process.
I was handed the reigns to the team at the end of last year’s campaign and I kept thinking “How can I make it bigger?” I didn’t want the team to sound like it was only for “bloggers.” I wanted it to be more inclusive, to feel open to anyone who wanted to join, regardless of whether they had a blog or even knew what a blog was.
That’s how this year’s team name, MovemberMania, came about.
MovemberMania is where anyone interested in helping me to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues can join. Everyone is welcome, whether they can grow a mustache or not.
I’m hoping to break the $1,000 mark in 2014, so we need as many Mo Bros and Mo Sistas as we can get to help make that possible.
Last year I had help from a lot of people — including bloggers — and I’m hoping each of you will not only help the cause again, but also join the MovemberMania team. There are some of you out there who have thousands of followers and if each one simply gave $1 to you (as part of MovemberMania) then we’d be well over our goal in not time!!
You don’t need a blog to join or even to help spread the word. When you join the MovemberMania team you’ll get your own MoSpace page that you can promote on social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. Anyone’s donations will be to you specifically but will count as part of the MovemberMania team total.
To be a part of MovemberMania, simply click here, create your page and you are set.
Last year the Movember campaign in the U.S. raised nearly $23 million and I need your help to not only break my goal, but to also help get the U.S. past last year’s total.
For more information on Movember, check out Movember 101.
If you have any problems joining MovemberMania or have any questions, feel free to contact me at jason.wommack@yahoo.com.
I hope some of fellow bloggers will join me again in spreading the word around this year.
I’m sure I left someone off this list, but please don’t let that be a reason for you not to help.
Wait, is the shoutout for me not to shave my mustache in November? Because I am offended now (hides upper lip with hand). 😉
Seriously, I wasn’t very involved last year. So it’s just asking for people to give a dollar? I think I can work with that 🙂
HAHAHAHAAHAHA!!! Definitely DO NOT SHAVE IT!! 🙂
I’d love for you to be part of Movember this year. It’s really easy.
You can either join the team then maybe write a post talking about Movember asking people for donations to you (which count toward the team totals). Or you could write a post a link to the team page or my personal page (links below).
And yes, even a $1 donation will be greatly appreciated!!!
