This is my third year participating in Movember and even though I know the rules, I’m choosing to cheat this year. But I have a good reason.
I know that Nov. 1 is the first day of Movember and that my face should be clean-shaven to kick-off the month-long campaign to raise awareness and funds for men’s health awareness.
I know that, but that’s not what I’m doing.
I shaved off my goatee and left a mustache for Halloween because it was a necessary part of my costume.
You just can’t be the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) without a mustache.
Technically I should have shaved everything off Saturday morning, but instead I left my upper lip covered with awesome.
The reason I didn’t shave is because I’m going to be on live TV Monday AM talking about Movember.
Yup… live TV. Gulp…
Remember me writing about meeting Joey Sulipeck at the Bruno Mars concert this summer?
Well, I had the great idea to see if Joey would wear mustache bow ties on the My Fox Memphis morning news show, Good Morning Memphis, to help me get the word out about Movember.
aaaa
That bow tie discussion lead to Joey suggesting that I come on air to talk with him about my Movember efforts.
While I didn’t officially know when I was going to be on air until Friday, I had already decided that I’d have a hairy upper lip when I did.
I figured that if I was going to be talking about growing mustaches for Movember then it’d look better if I actually HAD one when I did.
So, that’s why I’m cheating. Going on air (Monday, Nov. 3 at 9:20 a.m.) with a barely visible three-day growth just wouldn’t give me much credibility.
I’ve decided that after my on-air discussion with Joey, I’m going to trim my mustache down a little. That way it’ll be shorter and a little more accurate for a three-day growth.
I’m hoping that my Monday morning discussion with Joey will help drum up some donations, get some additional MovemberMania team members, and ultimately get some local businesses on board.
I’d love to have places around Memphis that offer discounts to men with mustaches during Movember — or maybe make mustache-themed goods — with the proceeds going toward Movember.
That’s what my Mom and sister are doing at Sweet Treats Bakery in Tupelo, Mississippi. They have partnered with me and will be having mustache cookies, cupcakes and various other mustache goodies on sale during the month. If you are in the Tupelo area this month, swing by and check out what they are doing.

Complete Guide to Movember
This is so exciting! Good for you! I think keeping the ‘stache for the show is a good idea.
I’m hoping you’ll post the link of today’s broadcast on your blog…I also hope you don’t suffer from a severe case of Flop Sweat, a la Albert Brooks in “Broadcast News.” I shaved this morning, but left what little ‘stache that was there. I’ll send a pic. 🙂
